1345 ATV Title and Registration RequirementsRenew Your Registration

Before your car has expired tags, you'll need to complete your license plate sticker renewal.

Going off the road? Don’t go off the grid.

Almost all states require ATV owners to title and register their vehicles. Read on for more information on the unique twists and turns of titling and registering an all-terrain vehicle.

Titling and Registering an ATV

In general, most states require some basic information for these transactions:

  • A certificate of title or manufacturer’s statement of origin signed over to you.
  • A signed application for title.
  • An ATV bill of sale.
  • Proof of vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • A notarized lien release, if applicable.
  • Proof of liability insurance.
  • An application fee.

Exceptions to ATV Titling and Registration Rules

In some instances, you might not need to register your ATV. Some states exempt an ATV from titling and registration requirements under unique circumstances, such as:

  • ATVs used exclusively for agricultural or business purposes.
  • ATVs owned by nonresidents with valid titling and registration in their home state.
  • ATVs owned and operated by a federal, state, or local government agency.
  • ATVs used only in connection with an ATV dealer’s business.

Of course, your state might have its own unique exemptions.

ATV Restrictions and Requirements

Keep in mind that some states require ATV owners to obtain a special license to operate these vehicles. Also, some states maintain age restrictions on ATV usage. So, ensure you meet the requirements of your area before you hop behind the wheel.
